AI IN SOWETO

AI IN SOWETO BOOTCAMP

AI in Soweto hosted 64 girls aged 15-18 from Lofentse High, Aurora Girls High, Letsibogo High and Meadowlands High in Soweto. They underwent an intense three-day boot camp which culminated in an exciting round of pitching.

THE CHALLENGE

We put participants through a social challenge under the principle of ‘AI for Good’, which entailed finding an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based solution to a community problem aligned to the UN sustainable development goals. The learners were exposed to AI concepts and ethics, as well as the design thinking process, pitching techniques, building chatbots and working with image classifiers.

THEME 1:  Staying safe in a Digital World
Think about Online safety, whether you are on social media, doing research or on a trusted site there are several issues that people encounter such as privacy and trust. Photos and conversations you may consider to be private can be shared at any time. Anything we do online is tracked.

Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person, in this case, young people. Sometimes cyberbullying can be easy to spot — for example, a text, tweet, or response to a post that is harsh, mean or cruel. Other acts are less obvious, like impersonating a victim online or posting personal information, photos, or videos designed to hurt or embarrass another person. For this theme, explore ways to detect, educate and protect. To be safer online

THEME 2: Economic Growth and Unemployment The current unemployment rate in South Africa is 27.5%. The challenge is to find a solution that will address unemployment in some way such as through job creation, skills development or training, job matching, and improved working conditions.
